How much does a new driveway cost in Ireland in 2026?

Tarmac, block paving, resin bound and pattern imprinted concrete — real price ranges for Irish driveways in 2026, with what actually moves the final quote.

The question every homeowner asks before committing to a new driveway is the same: what is this actually going to cost me? The honest answer is that it depends on a handful of things — the material, the size, the groundwork and who you hire — but real numbers exist, and I’ll give them to you straight.

Here are the typical price ranges for the most common driveway types in Ireland in 2026, followed by what actually moves the needle on the final quote.

Tarmac driveways: €2,500 to €5,000

Tarmac — or macadam, as it’s sometimes called — is still the most popular choice for standard residential driveways in Ireland. It’s fast to lay, affordable and durable. A single-car tarmac driveway on a standard semi-detached in Dublin or Cork will typically come in between €2,500 and €3,500. A double-width or longer run pushes into the €4,000 to €5,000 range.

Tarmac driveways usually take one to two days to complete, including the sub-base preparation. They’re low maintenance and can last 15 to 20 years before they need resurfacing.

The main limitation is aesthetics. Black tarmac is functional but plain, and it won’t add kerb appeal the way a block paved finish does. For many homeowners that’s a fair trade for the cost saving.

Block paving driveways: €4,000 to €9,000

Block paving is the premium end of the standard driveway market. Concrete or natural stone blocks laid in a pattern over a compacted sub-base, with a clean edging and jointing sand. A standard single-car block paving driveway in Ireland typically runs €4,000 to €6,000, with a double-width or larger project landing at €6,000 to €9,000 depending on the stone and the contractor.

The price reflects the labour involved. Block paving is hands-on work — each block is laid individually, the sub-base has to be exactly right, and the edging and jointing need time. Done well, a block paved driveway can last 30 to 50 years and adds genuine value to a property.

Block paving also has a practical advantage: it satisfies SUDS (sustainable urban drainage) requirements when laid with open joints, which most local authorities now expect for new or replacement driveways.

Resin bound driveways: €5,000 to €12,000

Resin bound surfacing is the fastest growing driveway choice in Ireland right now, and for good reason. A mixture of natural aggregate and clear UV-stable resin is poured and trowelled over a solid base to give a smooth, permeable, stone-chip finish. The result is a surface that looks high-end, drains well and resists weeds.

For a standard residential driveway you’re looking at €5,000 to €8,000, with larger or more elaborate projects reaching €10,000 to €12,000. The cost is higher than tarmac or basic block paving, but it’s increasingly competitive with quality natural stone.

Resin bound is fully permeable, which means it meets SUDS requirements without the need for special joints or channels. It’s also low maintenance — no weed killer, no re-sanding — and UV-stable resin means the colour doesn’t fade in Irish weather.

One thing to check: resin bound is different from resin bonded. Resin bonded has aggregate scattered on top of a resin coat and is not permeable — it tends to shed stones over time. Make sure you’re comparing like for like when getting quotes.

Pattern imprinted concrete: €4,000 to €8,000

Pattern imprinted concrete — sometimes called stamped concrete — is poured as a single slab and then pressed or stamped with a pattern mould while wet. You can replicate the look of cobblestones, slate or brick at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. Prices run from €4,000 to €8,000 for a standard double driveway.

The main risk is cracking. Concrete moves with Irish ground conditions and temperature swings, and hairline cracks can appear over time. A well-installed job on a solid sub-base holds up well; a rushed one on poor ground won’t. It’s also not permeable, which can create issues with local authority planning requirements in some areas.

What affects your final quote

The material is only part of the price. These are the things that move the number:

Size and shape. Simple rectangle driveways are faster to price and lay. Awkward shapes, curves and multiple levels add labour. Get a measurement before you get quotes.

Groundwork. If your existing driveway is being removed, that’s excavation, skip hire and disposal. If the sub-base is poor or uneven, it has to be rebuilt. A contractor who quotes without seeing the ground is guessing.

Dropped kerb. If you’re creating a new access point or replacing an existing one, you need your local authority’s approval and a licensed contractor. This adds €500 to €1,500 to the job and a few weeks for the application.

Drainage. A driveway needs to drain somewhere. If yours slopes toward the house, you need a channel drain. If the run-off goes to a public road, you need a permeable surface or a soak-away.

Location. Labour rates are higher in Dublin than in rural counties. Material delivery costs more in remote areas. Expect to pay 10 to 20 per cent more in Dublin than the national average for the same job.

Getting a fair quote

Get three quotes, in writing, itemised. A good quote breaks out the sub-base preparation, materials, labour, skip hire and any drainage work separately. If someone gives you a round number on the phone without seeing the site, treat it as a rough ballpark only.

Ask your contractor if they’re CRO-registered and publicly liability insured. Ask to see a completed job near you. The driveway market in Ireland has its share of travellers doing cash jobs with substandard materials — the risks are real and the recourse is limited.
